Guide · Gala

The made-to-measure tuxedo.

Evening wear follows clear rules — which is exactly why fit determines the impression. Once you know what black tie demands, the details can be tailored to you with confidence.

Fundamentals

What makes black tie.

Colour

Black or midnight blue. Blue reads deeper under artificial light, black is stricter.

Lapel

Silk shawl collar or peak lapel. A notch lapel has no place on a tuxedo.

Trousers

No turn-up, with silk braid down the side seam, held by braces rather than a belt.

Shirt and tie

White tuxedo shirt with turnback cuffs, paired with a self-tied black silk bow tie.

Fabrics

Materials for the evening.

For the tuxedo we choose fine wool around 280–320g with a quiet, matte surface — it lets the silk on lapel and braid shine. For summer events, a white or ivory dinner jacket works well; for winter, wool-mohair with a subtle sheen or velvet for private receptions.

FAQ

Questions about tuxedos and gala wear.

What exactly does black tie mean?

A tuxedo in black or midnight blue, silk lapels, trousers with silk braid, a white tuxedo shirt, black bow tie and black patent shoes or polished oxfords. A necktie has no place here.

Black or midnight blue?

Midnight blue reads deeper and richer than black under artificial light and photographs beautifully. Black remains the classically strictest option.

Shawl collar or peak lapel?

The shawl collar is softer and more traditional, the peak lapel elongates and looks sharper. Both are correct — a notch lapel, however, is not.

Can I wear a tuxedo more than once?

Yes. With dark trousers and a plain shirt, the tuxedo jacket becomes an evening jacket for invitations, premieres and corporate events.
